Bible Verses for Fear
Fear is loud, but God's Word is steadier. These verses invite you to stand courageously — not because the threat is small, but because his presence is near.
Verse 1
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
God does not just tell you not to fear — he tells you why: he is with you, and he is holding you up.
Verse 2
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
The valley is real, but so is his presence. You are not walking alone.
Verse 3
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
Fear is not the voice of the Spirit within you. Power, love, and a clear mind are.
Verse 4
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Courage is commanded because the Presence is promised. You do not have to manufacture bravery alone.
Verse 5
“The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid?”
Fear shrinks when you see who God is. He is bigger than whatever is threatening you.
Verse 6
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
This verse gives you permission to be afraid — and a next step. Trust is a choice you make inside the fear.
Verse 7
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
He goes ahead of you. Whatever you are walking into, he is already there.
Verse 8
“The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.”
You belong to a Father, not a taskmaster. Fear does not get to define your identity.
Verse 9
“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”
God's love is the antidote to fear. The more you know you are loved, the smaller fear becomes.
Verse 10
“I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.”
Seeking is answered. Turn toward him — even a whisper counts.
Verse 11
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.”
You are known by name and claimed as his. Fear cannot un-name you.
Verse 12
“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
The God who tracks sparrows is watching over you in detail. You are seen.
How to pray Scripture when you're afraid
- Name the fear out loud. Fear grows in silence. Speaking it to God shrinks it to size.
- Anchor to one verse. Choose a short line — "I am with you" — and repeat it slowly.
- Turn it into a prayer. "Lord, you are my light and salvation. I choose to trust you inside this fear."
- Take the next small step. Courage is often obedience in the smallest available direction.
- Thank him in advance. Gratitude for who he is loosens fear's grip on what could happen.
